Ingredients for Dal Makhani recipe

To make Dal Makhani

  • 2 cups sabut urad dal (soaked overnight)
  • 8 cups water
  • 2 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, finely sliced
  • 2 bowl rice
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 teaspoon shahi jeera
  • 1 teaspoon kasoori methi
  • 2 cups tomato puree
  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1.5 cups cream

To garnish

  • Green chillies split lengthwise for garnishing

Preparation of Dal Makhani recipe

To cook Dal Makhani

For steamed rice
  • Clean the rice and wash well till the water is clear.
  • In a heavy bottomed pan, put the rice and water over high heat and bring to a boil, adding the lemon juice also.
  • Once it comes to a boil, cover, and let it simmer over low heat, till cooked through, and the water is absorbed.
For Dal Makhani
  • To the dal, add water, salt and ginger. Cook until daal becomes tender.

Dal Makhani

  • In a heavy-based pan, heat butter and oil. Add shahi jeera and kasoori methi.
  • When they begin to splutter, add tomato puree, remaining salt, chilli powder and sugar. Stir-fry over a high flame, till the oil separates.

  • Add cooked daal and bring to boil. The consistency should be such that the daal should move around freely when stirred, otherwise add a little water.

  • Leave to simmer, uncovered, till well blended. Stir in cream and once it gets heated through, serve immediately, garnished with green chillies.
